The PRATT PRESS

October 2009

From the Desk of Anne Wade

Dear Families,

Can you believe that the first month of school is already over and we are in the middle of October? Fall has been very busy as students learn classroom expectations and routines, and teachers administer and analyze student assessments to use in determining student needs. Now that students have settled in, we want to remind families of some of our policies and opportunities to keep students healthy, safe and focused on learning.

Student Handbooks

The Pratt Calendar & Handbook 2009–2010 was recently sent home, one per family, with the Acknowledgment/Permission Form to be signed by parent and students. If you haven’t returned the Acknowledgement/Permission Form, please send back to school with your student as soon as possible. Please keep the Calendar/Handbook in a safe, convenient place for referral as needed during the school year.

Changes of Address

If you move or change your telephone number, please call the main office at 612-668-1122 or the Health Office at 668-1124 with the new information to update your records, or you may want to stop in with this information. Keeping our records updated is critical in case we need to reach you during the day for any changes in school scheduling or if your child becomes ill.

Preparation for Cold and Rainy Days

Last week with the snow and rain, we experienced the onset of winter. With the uncertainty of what the weather will bring each day, remember to check the daily forecast and be sure your child leaves home with a warm jacket, hat and mittens on those days. We continue outside recess on those very cold days if it is not raining, and when the outside temperature does not drop below 0 °F.

Fall Conferences

Pratt Community School’s fall conferences were held on Thursday, October 1 and Friday, October 2. Parent attendance was outstanding! Parents were able to conference with their children’s teacher either in person or by telephone. Conferences are an important way that teachers and parents can communicate about student progress in school. “Research shows that children whose parents help at school have a better attitude and achieve at higher levels.” Also, teachers who have classroom support are able to do their jobs better. By assisting in the classroom, parents are able to support their child’s homework.

Parent Survey

Please check the Tuesday Red Folder on Oct. 27 for the Fall Parent Survey. Your input is important to us and we hope you will find a few minutes to share your thoughts about Pratt School and return the survey to your child’s teacher. This is a great tool for our staff in considering ways we can improve student learning and family involvement at Pratt.

Sincerely,

All the Right Moves

Nearly two-thirds of Mrs. Willoughby’s class signed up to be in the 4th/5th grade Chess Club! Headed up by Mrs. Willoughby and Ms. Tolan, it will be held after school on Wednesdays beginning this week. Students who know how to play are very anxious to show off their skills, and several other students are excited about learning the game for themselves. It is truly a lifelong, positive activity and the 4th and 5th graders are very enthusiastic about being part of it at Pratt!

* As always, adult volunteers are more than welcome to join us. Call 612-668-1122 if you are interested — the more the merrier!
